Down in the South, the state of South Carolina is primed for the rush of MBA degree seekers looking for an expanding business economy. In a new national survey and report from Entrepreneurial Magazine, the cities of Charleston and Columbia have been ranked second and eighth best places in the nation respectively for entrepreneurial activity. For business students and MBA students in particular, this translates into a variety of diverse opportunities for employment and career building.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, South Carolina's gross state product in 2004 was $136 billion. The South Carolina Jobs-Economic Development Authority (JEDA), a significant contributor to the economic development of the state, has closed over $3 billion in business loans since 1983. Major businesses of interest to MBA degree holders include auto giants Michelin and BMW, members of the International Center for Automotive Research, Hubbell Lighting, Inc., and the Lockheed Martin Aircraft & Logistics Center.
